Having a baby is one of the most challenging things that happens in this world. There are so many life adjustments that happened for all parents involved and the entire family as a unit. If it is your first child or your fourth child, the challenges are still present. One challenge that has been linked to sleep, but often is not talked about as having a relationship to sleep, is postpartum depression.

Supine Hypotensive Syndrome

Women late in their pregnancy often have many discomforts in ailments. One of the ways that late-term pregnancy can negatively impact women’s health is by interrupting their sleep. Pregnancy makes sleeping very difficult, which is unfortunate considering how important sleep is for pregnant women. Bladder issues, back pain, and just general discomfort can make sleeping very hard when you are several months pregnant.

It's also common for women to feel dizzy, lightheaded, and as if they are not getting enough blood to their brain when they are lying down as well. This is known as supine hypotensive syndrome, or inferior vena cava syndrome. One of the main reasons that you may have trouble getting a good night's rest is because you are not sleeping according to your chronotype. Your chronotype is your body's natural schedule for sleep and productivity. Many traditional schedules do not accommodate all chronotypes, so it can be very difficult to adhere to a schedule that best fits yours. But once you figure out what yours is then you can at least begin to create a sleep schedule that works best for you.
