One of the biggest concerns for new parents is making sure their baby is comfortable through the night. Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as well as adults, so keeping them warm is important—but it’s just as important not to overheat them. Striking the right balance can help your baby sleep soundly and safely.

Why Temperature Matters for Babies

Newborns and young infants lose heat more quickly than adults, especially during sleep. A baby who’s too cold may wake frequently, while overheating has been linked to increased risks, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The ideal sleep environment is one that feels cozy without being hot.

Tips for Keeping Babies Warm at Night

  1. Set the Right Room Temperature

    • Aim for a room temperature between 68–72°F (20–22°C).

    • Use a reliable room thermometer to monitor the nursery, especially in colder months.

  2. Dress in Layers

    • A good rule of thumb is one more layer than what you would wear to sleep.

    • Cotton onesies, footed pajamas, or a wearable blanket (sleep sack) work well.

    • Avoid hats or hoods indoors, since babies release heat through their heads.

  3. Use Safe Bedding Alternatives

    • Never use loose blankets, pillows, or quilts in the crib.

    • Sleep sacks or swaddles (for newborns not yet rolling) provide warmth without the risks of suffocation.

  4. Check for Comfort

    • Feel your baby’s chest or back to gauge warmth—not hands or feet, which often feel cooler.

    • Your baby should feel warm, not sweaty or clammy.

  5. Mind the Season

    • In colder months, choose thicker sleep sacks or fleece pajamas.

    • In warmer months, lightweight cotton layers may be enough.

  6. Maintain Good Air Circulation

    • A fan or cracked window can keep air fresh and help regulate temperature.

    • Just ensure the crib isn’t placed in direct drafts from vents or windows.

Signs Your Baby Is Too Cold or Too Warm

  • Too Cold: cool chest, shivering, restless waking

  • Too Warm: flushed cheeks, damp hair, sweating, rapid breathing

Adjust clothing or room conditions if you notice these signs.

Conclusion

Keeping your baby warm at night is about balance. A comfortably cool room, breathable layers, and safe sleep practices will help your little one rest soundly and securely. When in doubt, remember this rule: babies need to be warm enough to be cozy but never so warm that they overheat.
